Here’s where we answer the questions you might have about Herekore Equine studies.

Do I need to do the courses in order?

You can do the modules in any order that suits you, but to be eligible for a certificate you must complete 5 marked modules in a course.

Where modules are graduated (e.g. Equitation 1, Equitation 2 etc.) the material in the higher numbered courses will be more in depth or challenging than the earlier content, but the earlier modules are not pre-requisites for the later modules.

Can I use a course to teach a class?

If you would like to teach the curriculum in a classroom or group learning environment, please contact us to discuss a group licence.

Do I have to have access to a horse to do a course?

No. The courses are theory based. Some objectives can be completed in a more practical fashion if you choose to do so but it’s not necessary for full marks.

Do I have to use the templates to present my work?

No. You can work directly on the templates, use them as a guide, or present your work in a different way that suits you.

How soon will my submitted work be returned?

Completed modules submitted for marking will usually be returned within a week of submission. This may vary by a few days depending on the volume of modules being received or the time of year. We will contact students if there is likely to be any delay.

Do I have to submit my work to be marked?

No. You can purchase the modules in one of two formats — marked, or unmarked. Modules to be marked will come with a unique code to identify them when submitted. Unmarked modules can be purchased and completed without needing to be submitted. Parents or tutors can mark these themselves, however students won’t be eligible for a Herekore Equine certificate at the end of the course.

What if I change my mind and want my modules marked?

If you would like to submit modules purchased as unmarked for marking, you will need to purchase a marking code separately. You can find these in the store.

What if I don’t achieve a passing mark (70%)?

If your work doesn’t meet the required standard, we will indicate what needs to be improved on the marking rubric when it is returned to you. You can make the changes needed and resubmit the module to be re-marked.

There’s something I don’t understand in the module. What should I do?

If something in the module is unclear or you are unsure how to proceed, please contact us using the email address provided in the module. We will provide further information and help you understand what is required to complete the module.

Do I have to purchase a whole course?

No. You can purchase as many or few modules as you wish. However, if you purchase five modules within the same course you will get them at the course price, which is discounted from the individual module price.

I’m not high school aged; can I still do a course?

Yes. Courses are aimed at high school level students, but younger students will be able to complete them with some adult support or guidance. People above high school age are welcome to enroll in the courses.

Will this give me a qualification?

Once a student has completed five marked modules, they are eligible for a certificate of course completion and an academic transcript. They can then choose to complete more modules for extra credit, or begin a new course.

Herekore Equine courses are not accredited with any formal educational institutions other than Homeschooling New Zealand (HSNZ). HSNZ offer credits for completed Herekore Equine courses, with each course qualifying for one credit at the appropriate level.

What is included in a course?

Each course consists of self contained modules. Within a module a student will receive:

  • A full course and module introduction
  • A list of recommended online resources
  • A sample page, to give an example of the kind of work required
  • Full instructions for meeting the objectives
  • A rubric outlining the criteria their work will be marked against
  • Optional templates that can be used to format their work
  • Contact details for email support

How do the courses work?

Herekore Equine courses are research based. Learning material is not presented to the student, nor are they expected to sit tests or exams. Instead, students gather, collate, and present information based on course instructions in order to achieve the objectives.

The modules are theory based, which means they can still be completed by students who don’t have access to horses. There are opportunities in some modules for students to include practical components if they wish

Courses can be started at any time, and can be completed in an academic year if each module is finished in eight weeks. Students are self directed though, and some fulfil the objectives sooner than this. Others choose to take longer over the work. It’s up to the individual to set the pace.
