Course Structure

Each Herekore Equine course is made up of nine modules, of which students must complete five in order to qualify for a certificate. None of the modules are compulsory; students can choose the makeup of their course.

Students are free to choose extra modules if they wish and these will be added to their transcript as ‘extra credit’ modules. Each module has ten objectives that they need to complete.

Modules

ES 1.1 Horse Breeds

This module is about equine breeds. The overall goal of this module is that students will become familiar with the terminology surrounding equine breeds and the large number of breeds that exist (between 150 and 700 according to some sources), as well as getting to know a number of breeds in closer detail.

ES 1.2 Equine Anatomy 1: Points, skeleton, joints, muscles, skin

This module is about equine anatomy, and in particular the points, skeletal system, ligaments and muscular systems, and skin of the horse. This module aims to help students become familiar with the terminology surrounding equine anatomy, and how the skeletal and muscular systems work together, as well as getting to know some of the disorders that can be associated with these systems. 

ES 1.3 Riding Gear

This module is about riding gear. Students will become familiar with the huge array of different items and styles of each item that makes up the horse’s ‘tack,’ as well as getting to know the names of the different parts of the items, and how to look after them.

ES 1.4 The Horse in Motion: Gaits and Movement

This module is about the horse in motion; gaits and movement. Through this module students will become familiar with the terminology used when referring to the gaits and movements of the horse, the types of gait and how they are performed, as well as any issues that might affect the gait.

ES 1.5 General Knowledge

This module covers general knowledge about horses. It incorporates a number of different subjects that don’t naturally fall under any of the other module headings, but are still important.

ES 1.6 Colours and Markings

This module is about colours and markings, and includes learning about the base coat colours, variations, and eye colours. Here students will become familiar with the various colours, colour modifiers, patterns, and markings found in the coats of horses.

ES 1.7 Horses in Culture

This module is about horses in culture. The module aims to make students familiar with how horses have shaped and appeared in cultures around the world and in history, including today.

ES 1.8 Wild/Feral Horses

This module is about horses that are undomesticated. By undertaking this module students will become familiar with different feral horse breeds, as well as information regarding their wellbeing and control. .

ES 1.9 Basic Equitation 1

This module is about equitation. Through this module students will become familiar with the basics of horse riding. Students can choose whether to do this module in a practical manner (preferred) or in theory, or a combination of the two.
